Continually producing and exhibiting artwork

Born in Petaluma California in 1965, John came into this world in an artistic environment. His father, Frank Marshall, was an art teacher at  Petaluma High School and his mother, Patricia Marshall, taught painting in her private art studio for twenty-five years. Along with his three siblings, the family traveled extensively, exposing the children to art and culture. John graduated Petaluma High School with an emphasis on architectural drawing in 1983 and continued his education at Santa Rosa Junior College where he enrolled in his first art courses, painting. He received his Associates Arts Degree at S.R.J.C. and was accepted at Cal State University Long Beach in Spring of 1986, where he majored in sculpting. During his time at C.S.U.L.B. he took a year off and studied art in Florence, Italy at Studio Arts Center International (SACI) and a semester at Sonoma State University with an emphasis in bronze casting. After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in sculpting from Cal State University Long Beach, he worked for world renown L.A. artist/ sculptor Peter Shelton. He worked there for about two years assisting in mold making, bronze casting, fiberglass fabrication and general fabrication. John then moved back to northern California where he worked for an art foundry in Sebastopol called Bronze Plus. There he did bronze casting, mold making,  welding and bronze chasing for about a year. He was offered a job in a special effects company that specialized in fabricating vehicles for the film industry, called T.F.X. located in Simi Valley. He relocated to the Los Angeles area to work for T.F.X. where he learned automotive modeling and fabrication and was exposed to film sculpting. He worked there for about two years then went on his own working for independent prop shops and model shops in and around the Los Angeles area. John continues to produce his own artwork and exhibited in several group shows and a solo exhibit in 2000 at B.G.H. Gallery in Bergamot Station Arts Center, Santa Monica.  In 1996 John joined Union Local 755 and has been actively working as a union sculptor for the film industry ever since. As a union sculptor he works for the construction department, in art departments as a model maker, costume design, props, set dressing and special effects. John has enjoyed working as a sculptor in the fine arts, bronze casting, architectural ornament, automotive modeling and as a film sculptor since graduating with a B.F.A. in Sculpture in 1991. He plans on continuing that line of work and continues to create his own style of art work in his free time. John currently lives in Petaluma, California with his wife and three children.
